Translation - English Torture and the Death Penalty
The 85th Congress (May 2009) saw the LDH renew its efforts in the fight against torture and capital punishment. In a drive for awareness on abolition, the league worked alongside Ensemble contre la peine de mort, Amnesty International France, Action by Christians Against Torture (ACAT) and the United National Group to Support Mumia Abu-Jamal to organise a major demonstration in Paris for the World Day Against the Death Penalty on 10 October, and launched various campaigns as part of the event.
To cement its renewed commitment to these campaigns, the LDH, which is a partner in the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, worked on the preparations for the world congress in Geneva on 24, 25 and 26 February 2010.
A correspondence was set up with death-row inmates in the United States to offer them psychological as well as material support. The LDH closely monitored a number of their cases in the aim of raising the awareness of elected officials, organisations and the public to call off the executions.
