Source text - English Translators’ footnotes in feminist translation projects serve similar purposes: they point to and discuss specific linguistic difficulties, signalling the translator’s presence and involvement. Both prefaces and footnotes allow translators and editors to draw attention to the
feminist aspects of the translation and/or the original text, explain their approach to it and inform readers of their intentions. Prefaces are sometimes complemented by separate academic articles, as in the case of Kamal’s discussion of the work she accomplished in cotranslating and editing the Arabic translation of The Encyclopedia of
Women and Islamic Culture (Kamal 2008).
Where there is a risk of feminism being seen as a deleterious foreign import, other strategies can be useful. Dharmasiri (2017), working in contemporary Sri Lanka where a certain resistance to European and North American feminist ideas prevails, embeds translations of relevant excerpts from Simone de Beauvoir or Mary Wollstonecraft within explanations and demonstrations of existing, local, traditional work that is not labelled
feminist but is intrinsically so. She thus counters the effects of contemporary nationalist Buddhist ideology and not only makes these feminist materials available in the target culture but also draws parallels between them and the ancient texts of local Buddhist nuns.
From a feminist perspective, not every text requires or merits translation, and non-translation has therefore proven a useful strategy. Canadian de Lotbinière-Harwood justifies her decision to refrain from translating male poets thus: “I realized with much distress that my translating voice was being distorted into speaking in the masculine” (1995:63–64).

traducción feministas tienen propósitos semejantes: indican y
discuten dificultades lingüísticas específicas, señalando
la presencia y la intervención del traductor. Los prólogos y las
notas al pie les permiten a los traductores y los editores atraer la
atención hacia los aspectos feministas de la traducción y/o del
texto original, explicar su enfoque e informar a los lectores
sobre sus intenciones. Los prólogos a veces se complementan
con artículos académicos aparte, como es el caso de la
discusión de Kamal sobre el trabajo que llevó a cabo en la
cotraducción y edición de la traducción al árabe de The
Encyclopedia of Women and Islamic Culture (Kamal 2008).
Donde haya riesgo de que el feminismo se vea como una
importación extranjera nociva, otras estrategias pueden ser
útiles. Dharmasiri (2017), al trabajar en la contemporánea Sri
Lanka, donde prevalece cierta resistencia a las ideas feministas
europeas y norteamericanas, incorpora traducciones de
fragmentos relevantes de Simone de Beauvoir o Mary
Wollstonecraft en explicaciones y demostraciones de obras
existentes, locales y tradicionales que no están catalogadas
como feministas, pero que intrínsecamente lo son. De este
modo, contrarresta los efectos de la ideología nacionalista
contemporánea budista y no solo hace que este material
feminista esté disponible en la cultura meta, sino que también establece paralelismos entre ellos y los textos antiguos de los
monjes budistas locales.
Desde una perspectiva feminista, no todos los textos requieren o merecen una traducción, y se ha probado que la no traducción es una estrategia útil. La canadiense de Lotbinière-
Harwood justifica su decisión de abstenerse de traducir a poetas
masculinos, así: “Comprendí con mucha aflicción que mi voz
traductora se estaba siendo distorsionada hacia una voz masculina”
(1995:63–64).
