all works well until Excel finds a paragraph mark in a Word cell - at this point Excel creates a new cell that did not exist in the Word table so that tables do not match any more. Any suggestion to prevent this? (apart from replacing all paragraph marks)

Even manual line break (SHIFT+ENTER) causes Excel to crate a new cell. If you copy a table from Excel to Word, all soft line breaks in Excel (ALT+ENTER) will be replaced by paragraph breaks. It is advisable either to replace thosy by a character string, which does not occur in the translation (x123z or similar), then to mark this in Trados as external TAG, translate, copy back to Excel and then search for that phrase to replace it with ALT+ENTER.
