Spanish term

orientar (please see phrase)

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Hi this is part of a Doctorate course and relates to research in various fields. The phrase is driving me mad and says:
"Los profesores doctores del departamento que trabajan en este campo y que pueden orientar la investigación de los estudiantes son: ...". is it possible to 'orientar investgacion?'. I was thinking of something along the lines of:
"The professors of the department who work in this field and can GUIDE STUDENTS in their research are" but I don't think it's quite the same meaning, although it makes more sense to me expressed like this. Any ideas? Thanks as always.

Discussion

MPGS Jul 31, 2005:
my suggested answer assumed that change: 'help students' / 'orient students'. I think you also can orient your or somebody else's inventigation. :)
Xenia Wong Jul 31, 2005:
You can use the phrase either way: guide students during the process of.... XXX or guide students in their research work...
Non-ProZ.com Jul 31, 2005:
orientar qualifies investigacion My question is really whether I can change the phrase around like I have, i.e. say guide students and not guide the research of students.

May be a bit repetitive, but here's my example:

y que pueden orientar la investigación de los estudiantes son = and who are able to guide students in (their) research are

"their" is optional

I think you could justifiably say \"offer students guidance in terms of research\" here.
