One of the problems with the bulk trades (as with oil transportation) is that ships normally carry cargo one way but return in ballast because there is nothing to take back. However, oil/bulk/ore (OBO) ships have never become as popular as dedicated bulk or oil carriers, partly because their complexity increases building and operating costs.
