Spanish to English Law/Patents Medical (general)
This is a document from Spain.

Perhaps it's as easy as 'crimes against freedom and sexual indemnity', but I have been trying to find it on the internet and not had much luck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

crimes against freedom and sexual indemnity/respect of sexuality)

indemnidad se refiere a protección frente a un posible daño; en términos legales quizá indemnity sea más exacto.

agree John Hughson (J.D., M.B.A. Finance) : Creo que lo has traducido... "sexual freedom and indemnity" es ambiguo en inglés, pero "freedom and sexual indemnity" es muy claro.

crimes that violate a person's freedom from sexual harm

Yes, it's a twist, but justified, I think, because some target readers (e.g. in the USA) will simply **not** understand "indemnity" here.

For most Americans (sad but true), "indemnity" is a words that appears in contracts and has something to do with "not being able to sue rich / powerful companies."

By saying "freedom from sexual harm", yeah, maybe some meaning is lost, but I also think there is a **gain** of comprehensibility.

Also American readers will understand that a person free form sexual harm is sexually "free".

Maybe this is not right, but I would be careful about using the word "indemnity" for US clients, unless they are lawyers... and even then....

Peer comment(s):

agree Patrice : your translation is a good one but I feel you underestimate the ability of lawyers -- I suppose they say the same thing about MBAs (not a lawyer myself -- husband is, though)

Hehehehe... I am sure... Well, I am also a lawyer, and I **do** tend to cringe over legalese, but I think if we say "sexual indemnity" (like the selected answer), most readers would understand.
agree Christina Courtright : sounds good but caveat: one of the tenets of legal/court translation/interpretation is to never dumb it down - you have to preserve the "language register" of the original

I understand, and that is very hard for me. When I was working as a litigator, the prevailing wisdom was "plain language" wherever possible, but once somethig is already written, I guess maybe it has to be respecfted as it is / was.

offences (or crimes) against the individual's (or person's) sexual freedom and dignity

me decidí por "dignity" porque el daño puede ser físico o psicológico

también diría en forma más detallada:

offences against the individual's (or person's) sexual freedom and right not to be subject to harmful behaviour

estoy seguro que eso es lo que cubre la ley... como se aprecia en su texto

crimes against liberty and sexual freedom

Grammatically, "sexual" doesn't modify both elements. To get around repeating "freedom," you could use "liberty" in the first instances. Granted, "crimes against liberty" isn't what you usually say, but it's an acceptable work-around.

crimes against sexual freedom and inviolability

I'm contributing this answer belatedly simply for the glossary (which includes a link to this page), as the same term has come up in an extract from the Spanish Civil Code I'm translating, and this is the version I came up with.

The extract is about divorce actions and runs "No será preciso el transcurso de este plazo para la interposición de la demanda cuando se acredite la existencia de un riesgo para la vida, la integridad física, la libertad, la integridad moral o ***libertad e indemnidad sexual*** del cónyuge demandante..."
Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Carter : This is probably the best translation of the term here, as the wording of the ST is incorrect, see https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delitos_contra_la_libertad_e_i...
