Mornin' All,

Purely out of interest, not something from a text I have to translate.

explanation - the more you've had to drink, the more attractive you find someone...

I'm sure there are other ways of putting it in English than "to drink someone pretty/beautiful"?

TIA,

Here's a scientific 'explanation' of the phenomenon -- fresh off the press, ironically! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/4468884.stm

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I don't remember hearing this expression before, but I've probably been in Germany too long. Thanks everyone, even to Chris for making that special extra effort (at least he tried :-)). James' "Beauty is in the eye of the besoffen" is good too."

Although also used in other contexts, mostly used to mean "jemanden schöntrinken".

'beer goggle effect' / to put your 'beer goggles' on

That's what first sprang to mind - but I am not sure how you would phrase it - or if it's exactly what you are after.

Study: 'Beer goggle' effect a true phenomenon

By Kristen M. Neufeld email
Collegian Staff Writer

British scientists recently proved something that some college students say they've known for years -- that alcohol makes others seem more attractive.

In other words, yes, the "beer goggle" effect is real.

Academics in Scotland have found proof of the so-called "beer goggles" effect, following a study involving 80 students.

The researchers wanted to measure the infamous phenomenon by which members of the opposite sex become more attractive more alcohol is consumed.

They found that men and women who have drunk a moderate amount of alcohol find the faces of the opposite sex 25% more attractive than their sober counterparts.

Anyone can look like this after a few drinks!

The study also revealed there was no difference in the beer goggle effect between men and women.
