French term

société du paraître

French to English Art/Literary Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Dans notre monde occidental, l’Art est devenu avant tout une valeur marchande, réservée à une élite et à une *société du « paraître »*.

All of I can think of "based on appearances", but I'm sure that there's something better out there!

Thanks in advance for your ideas,
Jocelyne

consumer society or society based on conspicuous consumption

Just to make it sound more sociological...

conspicuous consumption: A term coined by economist and social critic Thorstein Veblen to describe buying things we don't want or need to impress others.

agree Sandra Petch : I like the "conspicuous consumption" especially as it ties well with the "art as commodity" theme.

society of appearances

I think simply this would do nicely... garners lots of hits as well so it's obviously in use, e.g.

"It's not just writing, it's everything anymore, or at least it seems that way. We've become a society of appearances. Look good, smell good, show off our cool stuff. Who cares what's inside, how we treat others, where our values lie. It's all become a big lie. We even market ourselves to ourselves, because we deserve this or that or whatever."

""We live in a society of appearances," the San Juan businessman said. "He who has more is worth more..."

"Oscar Wilde entirely dedicates this play to the exploration of the way a woman can be saved from destruction in this society of appearances..."

You could put the phrase in inverted commas if you think it necessary.

a "look at me" society

Something along those lines perhaps?

Art has become a commodity, reserved for an elite and a "look at me" society.

Or, to take the "appearences" route, a "society obsessed with appearances".

appearance-conscious society

Or "appearance- oriented society"

"Although the issues of human appearance and disfigurement to the face and body affect everyone in today’s appearance-conscious society, relatively little research has been focused on this area. "

"Alternative Femininities: Body, Age and Identity... A revealing look at contemporary femininity, Alternative Feminities gives voice to a previously silent group of women who struggle to resist sexist gender stereotypes, yet age with style, individuality and creativity. By looking at how real women negotiate self-image in an increasingly appearance-conscious society, Holland has provided a much-needed corrective to theoretical accounts of gender and femininity lacking in real data."

flaunt-it society

I have to say I agree with most of our colleagues' suggestions, as well as your own. They do seem to fit the original meaning perfectly. This is just an extra hint that might inspire other alternatives... Hope it helps.
