Spanish term

se presenta de dos maneras: una es fulminante, la otra es corriente

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
I'm translating a linguistic text and there is one phrase that comes from a medical fragment analysed in my article. I'm not too sure how to translate fulminante and corriente when referring to meningitis and would like a second opinion as I don't think sudden and common may fit here. Do they have another meaning? The full phrase is:
Hay varios tipos de meningitis […] Entre las bacterianas astá la meningocócica, que es contagiosa, y se presenta a su vez de dos maneras: una es fulminante, y la otra más corriente, tiene los síntomas descritos, y es de buena recuperación.
Many thanks as always for any help!!!

Am I correct in assuming that "descritos" does not refer to a previous description of symptoms in your text? (I think it's a typo for "discretos")

I've done a lot of work on meningitis.

Your question doesn't reflect the contrast, which is between
symptoms that are fulminating or MILD. "Corriente" refers to the fact that the milder form is more common.

I neglected to say that your question did not include "sintomas discretos," which is what is being contrasted with "fulminante."

Urico points out that my examples all refer to meningococcal meningitis with fulminating septicemia. HOWEVER, meningococcal meningitis can also be "fulminating" when it spreads in other ways (SEE THREE EXAMPLES BELOW). Similar findings to the above were reported by Powars et al [7], following a review of 113 cases of meningitis caused by N. meningitidis (serotype C). The remaining 5 required a total of 27 operations during initial hospitalisation and 2 required major amputation of parts of their lower limbs.

neutral Andrés Martínez : Sí, la septicemia meningocócica, pero en este caso alude específicamente a la meningitis meningocócica.

I see your point about septicemia. However, "fulminating" can also apply to other forms of meningococcal meningitis (see new examples).

acute and common

"fulminante" es aquí sinónimo de "aguda", es decir, que tiene una evolución rápida desde la aparición de los síntomas. Puedes usar "acute" pero, en mi opinión, no veo incorrecta su traducción por "sudden".
En cuanto a la segunda forma, tiene una evolución más lenta y es la más frecuente, por eso yo hablaría de "common" sin más.

Meningococcal meningitis, when it appears on its own, is somewhat less serious than meningococcal sepsis and treatment is more likely to be successful. Still, all too often, it also leads to death or long term sequelae such as deafness. The disease is initially characterized by cold-like symptoms. ***On rare occasions these symptoms will lead to the acute phase of the illness which usually lasts about one to three days. *** Symptoms are numerous and variable; the most characteristic are photophobia, neck stiffness, and severe headache.

neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : "Fulminating" means very severe. The more common form has MILD symptoms ("los sintomas discretos"). "Fulminating" and "acute" are not synonymous. I think "descritos" was a typo.

Pero Muriel, el texto señala "descritos", no "discretos", y yo entiendo que se refiere a una evolución más larga, con una serie o sucesión de síntomas bien definidos en el tiempo.
