Affectation du resultat

French to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) Financial report
It refers to a statement issued by the sole owner of a company concerning the annual report of the company. My problem is with the affectation, which seems to be like a Public notice or release. Distribution does not make sense in English.

Discussion

Julie Barber Aug 21, 2006:
When you say 'the document does not mention any allocation of the profit or the income' - it does mention it because this is what affection du resultat means. Did a similar job recently also with sole owner.
Julie Barber Aug 21, 2006:
Stephen - if you don't mind me saying, I think that you're looking too far into this one.

In the Routledge French-English Dictionary of Business, Commerce and Finance, "affectation" is defined as an "allocation", "appropriation," or "allotment." "Resultat" is defined as "profit" or "income." So "affectation du resultat" is mostly likely "appropriation of income" or "allocation of income." "Profit" is derived from income, so I chose "income" in this case. In English, "appropriation" means "something (as money) set aside by formal action for a specific use." "Allocation" means "allot, assign." (And "assign" means to "transfer property to another." "Allot" means "to distribute as a share"). After all that, I think I'd settle on "appropriation of income." This, however, it without the benefit of the context.

Appropriation of the result

"Appropriation of the result" doesn't mean allocation of a dividend, it simply refers to what is done with the profits of the company if there are any. It is usually a heading in the accounts, and is followed by a description of what will be done with any income.
Note from asker:
I see your point, but the context is the problem. The rest of the document merely announces that the sole owner accept the accounting result as true. He specifically says that no dividend has been given. Therefore, while appropriation is correct on a word to word basis, the document does not mention any allocation of the profit or the income, just its existence.

agree rkillings : The shareholders of a French company are required by law to make explicit recognition and appropriation of the year's profit, if any. Until this happens, the owners' equity in the item is unclear.
