English term

ballot

English to Arabic Other Government / Politics
The Democratic Convention of 1852 found itself deadlocked, and in need of a candidate.

It goes to 49 ballots. All the frontrunners are gone. And on the 49th ballot, the Democratic Party reaches way back and grabs this young man who's now a Mexican War hero, a former US Senator, has no, very few enemies in Washington because he walked away from it early, and nominates him for President.

People voted more for the party than the candidate. Without even campaigning, a surprised Franklin Pierce won by a landslide.

I can't get the exact meaning of "ballot". Thanks for help.

N.B: Franklin Pierce is the 14th President of the United States.

Have you thought of perhaps posting this question as English-to-English first? You will likely receive good insights into the meaning in that historical setting.
