Only in last paragraph it is mentioned use of spear gun, all before are normal skin/free diving techniques and procedures.

When you said “…è consigliato il conseguimento di un brevetto.”,most probably it is meant Skin Diver Certificate (this one is by PADI) or any other equivalent (by other diving associations).

In this case it does not mater if it is called free diving or skin diving. What is meant is that you are hunting U/W with out use of SCUBA equipment. And that is called spear fishing. Thickness or complete absence of wet suit is not important at all. See Gloria’s explanation. In most parts of World today you can’t use SCUBA and do spear fishing as it is prohibited by local laws. And this is from my experience as PADI Master Instructor around World.

thanks Fiona, I stick to my idea (or to Grey's or Deserfox's) as spearfishing does not necessarily imply it is done without breathing apparatus. See you at the powwow!!

The text is basically a booklet which will be distributed in seaside resorts telling people how to stay safe on the beach and at sea. Here's the whole paragraph:

Una volta all’anno fai visite mediche specialistiche

avevo cercato qualcosa che fosse collegato anche alla pesca, le immersioni in apnea vengono normalmente definite skin diving o freediving ... poi sotto l'acqua puoi fare ciò che vuoi, fotografare o pescare

well, read the guide http://www.underwaterfishing.co.uk/Guide/Spearfishing Guide.... and I think all is explained

...Spearfishing is carried out with only a snorkel and not with the assistance of underwater breathing apparatus and so it is essential that safe snorkelling is mastered first. It is not intended that this guide should cover all aspects of learning to snorkel as there are a number of excellent publications covering this topic.

Having learnt to snorkel and to hold your breath for a minimum of 30 seconds underwater, you should be able to proceed to basic Spearfishing techniques.

PADI does have fishing certificate called U/W hunter.
agree Mara Ballarini : that's exactly right - here in the tropics in Australia we have both - call it freediving, just 'immersioni in apnea', like scuba diving without tanks, and if you're going fishing underwater without tanks, simply spearfishing - no need to add freediving

Breath-held diving

Found in the Hopeli dictionary but it gives the Italian term as:
immersione in apnea. Ask your client if this is what he/she is looking for.

Reading the context you gave it can be spear-fisihing with the breath-held diving technique.

freediving spear fishing

Hi Fiona,
I have no doubts about this. When I am not scuba diving this Summer I will be freediving without tanks. I want to try what Dave King did (see reference).
One thing I very definitely will not be doing is spear fishing. One cos its illegal in Sechelles where I will be. Two because, I'd get eaten alive by sharks with bloody fish in a tropical sea and three because it should be banned everywhere.

neutral Vladimir Micic : most countries(read all) around Wolrd wouldn't let you use scuba and do spear fishing.I do agree, no spear fishing at all, but in some countries it is possible to do it only if you have license and only if you are skin/free diving(ex. Italy, Croatia,…).

NO No No spear guns with or without tanks. They are confiscated at customs and you get them back when you leave, no messing. I know a guy who goes spear fishing with tanks every year in Greece, crazy.
