French term

espaces d’éveils éducatifs

French to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy educational programme in African country
I'm not sure how to interpret/translate this term.

L’Education Bilingue comptait au cours de l’année scolaire 2005-2006, 36 ****** espaces d’éveils éducatifs ****** avec 2 832 enfants de 3 à 6 ans dont 50,28% de filles ,

CONTEXT (PRECEDING PARAGRAPH):

[assuming couvant is a typo!]

My alternatives so far are: pre-school education areas/ early learning centres. The problem with the latter is that, elsewhere in the text, it has initial capitals, making it look horribly like a certain chain of shops selling educational toys.

Many thanks for any suggestions!

Discussion

Julie Barber Aug 8, 2007:
or would 'early learning centre' do then? ok it might be for that age group but it doesn't actually say 'pre-school'....
writeaway Aug 8, 2007:
check out "pre-school early learning"
Carol Gullidge (asker) Aug 8, 2007:

I should mention that these are pre-school children. Schooling begins at the age of 6
Carol Gullidge (asker) Aug 8, 2007:
thanks, Julie! A bit too strange, I felt, and I couldn't find a lot of convincing refs... But not to be discounted!
Julie Barber Aug 8, 2007:
there is evidence out on google for 'awakening workshops'; strange I know, but true.....'learning' is the other option...

pre-school (learning) settings

Dans le rapport sur le Burkina Faso, ce terme a été traduit par "educational discovery areas" mais cela me semble beaucoup trop spécifique (voir par exemple ww.littlelighthouseccc.com/vision.php)

Maybe "pre-school learning settings" or simply "pre-school settings"

This approach primarily involves the communication strategy to promote community participation and the development of “educational discovery areas” (Espaces d’Eveil Educatif) targeting children 3-6 years of age and aiming to give them equal
educational rights and opportunities in rural, suburban, and urban areas.
Note from asker:
thanks, hirselina for such a prompt respones. I think it's important to retain the sense of "education/learning"
I also like the "pre-school learning settings" (existing translation) in your refs, and shall take it as one of your suggestions!
Peer comment(s):

agree suezen : I like 'pre-school discovery centres' or pre-school learning workshops (not sure about settings though)

agree writeaway : with suezen-settings isn't great-espace is some sort of venue

agree Sheila Wilson : or "pre-school educational discovery areas" from your second link

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "thanks very much, hirselina! I particularly like the translation given in your 2nd link, and agree with Sheila. I took "pre-school" for the sake of the glossary, but used in in the translation "
