kristagita (asker) Nov 23, 2007:
Reply from asker Michael, yes, you were correct I did just want a confirmation that there was nothing that stood out as being incorrect from the context of the passage. I should have put that in there. I am sorry about any confusion. I had thought about entering it as two seperate parts, maybe that would have been easier?
Thanks a bunch!
Michael Powers (PhD) Nov 22, 2007:
There is a lot of confusion because I got the idea that you want the entire translation checked. What you need to do is split it up into different parts, each part 10 words or less. Then we can concentrate on the relevant section.
Cath St Clair (X) Nov 22, 2007:
Could you specify which part you are unsure about?

agree Donald Scott Alexander : I think both source terms ("de acuerdo con la ley" and "de conformidad con la lay") can be translated as "in accordance with the law," as in the translation suggested by the asker Kristagita.

in accordance with the law

If you were asking for a translation of the entire context, I would suggest the following:

In accordance with the law, medical certifications must be issued solely on official letterhead numbered and authorized by the Medical College of Honduras. Violation of the preceding provision will result in penalties in accordance with the Organic Law of the Honduras Medical College.

Notes:

(1) "membretado" ~ "on official letterhead"
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q="on official letterhead...
The word "official" is not strictly necessary here, but it's used a lot to reinforce the idea of "letterhead."

(2) I placed the phrase "numbered and authorized" AFTER "letterhead" so that it occurs immediately before the word "by," directly translating the word "por" in the original, and naturally expressing the idea that the certifications on this letterhead are numbered and authorized BY the Medical College.

(3) "unicamente" = "solely": You could also use "only" here, but "unicamente" is a bit stronger than "solamente," so I chose "solely" which is a bit stronger than "only."

(4) "extender" = "issue": Normally the word "expedir" means "issue," but I think "issue" also works here.

(5) "disposición" = "provision": I think this is a bit more accurate than "order."

(6) "deben" = "must": The other suggested translation "should" is also ok, but for a legal-sounding document like this the word "must" might be better.

OOPS! -- I used both "Honduras Medical College" and "Medical College of Honduras" in the explanation.

They should BOTH say "Medical College of Honduras." Sorry! :-)
