Spanish term

catalina

Spanish to English Science Geology soil types
In an article about a mountain town in Puerto Rico, I have this sentence:

Sus suelos --conocidos como catalina y cialitos-- se denominan suelos de altura.

I know nothing of geology and have had no luck finding anything useful via Google. Any help or suggestions will be welcome.

Oops - I meant 'Catalina silty clay'! Sorry about that.
Peer comment(s):

agree Enrique Espinosa : Yes, I think Catalina is a proper name, a local name for a defined or special soil. I agree with Catalina (clay soil)

I believe they are names. "Its lands, known as catalina and cialito, are denominted as highlands."

Catalina soil

There is also Catalina schist and Catalina steatite.
Adding the word soil to Catalina defines a type of soil.
See the following web page to find the difference Catalina soils have with other soils.

http://es.ucsc.edu/~fnimmo/website/abstracts/sutter.doc

Unlike the other soils, the Catalina Base soil possesses significant amounts of anhydrite (CaSO4), thenardite (Na2SO4), glauberite [Na2Ca(SO4)], blodite [Na2Mg(SO4)2•4H2O] and has the highest levels of nitrate (1.6 wt%) and chlorine (0.5 wt%) relative to the other soils (0.01 wt% Cl and NO3). Receiving material from the summit and slope, the Catalina Base soil is deeper (~400cm) than the Catalina Summit soil (~40cm). Accumulation of nitrate, chloride and Na-sulfate salts in the Catalina Base soil may be the result of mass wasting and leaching processes. A thicker soil would have the additional effect of inhibiting subsequent aqueous activity from leaching these salts from the profile.
Note from asker:
Thank you, slothm. Interesting info--didn't understand much, though!
