pushed back against an open door

History
Contexte : fin de la la guerre 14-18
Despite a temporary German breakthrough in spring 1918, their resources were overstretched, their manpower dwindling, and industry struggling to keep up with the army's demands. When the Allies pushed back, it was against an open door, and, on the point of military, economic, and social collapse, Germany accepted an armistice in November.
Je ne suis pas sûre de bien comprendre l'expression ni même, du coup, la logique de la phrase. Merci d'avance

: J' y avais pensé aussi mais "enfoncer des portes ouvertes", c' est plutôt "dire des évidences", non?

The idea is that when the Allies pushed the Germans back, they met with less resistance than they might have expected; instead of pushing back as if against, say, a wall (so they wouldn't budge), when they pushed, it was if there was nothing behind them, and so they moved backwards.
That's the idea, but I don't know how you're going to render that in FR!
