break off at mid-term growth
Wondered if it might be something like the tree below:
Maesopsis proved to have a strong self-pruning tendency. Accordingly, the research hypothesis postulating that long branchless boles can be achieved, even in trees established solitary or under very little light competition was confirmed.
Self-shading proved to be highly sufficient to control bole clearance in Maesopsis. This phenomenon was demonstrated by the high bole height/tree height ratio and the low number of green branches below the main crown.
In addition it was observed that the branches break off quickly and close to the bole. This reinforces Maesopsis’ the favourable self-pruning tendency and explains the absence of a dead crown area. Subsequently, tree density is correlated to bole height but even without foreign shading Maesopsis develops reasonably long bole sections.

: Mid season is the right approach to this. Not right away, and not "long term," that is, once the season is over.
