ヘッジファンドは米国で生まれた私的な投資組合（特定・少数の投資家や金融機関などから出資を受ける）の一種で、規制の及ばない租税回避地域に設立する投資会社も多くある。<br /><br />ジョージ・ソロス氏が率いるクォンタム・ファンド（各国の金利・通貨政策の歪みを狙って大きな資金を動かす「マクロ・ファンド」）が有名で、極めて投機的なファンドと思われがちである。 しかし、「へッジ（リスク回避）」という名前が示す通り、リスクをコントロールする様々なタイプがある。<br /><br />投資内容などの情報開示義務がないため、公式な統計がなく実態が明らかにされていないが、ファンド数は3,000～4,000、純資産規模は4,000億ドルにも達しているという推計もある。 融資やデリバティブ（先物、オプション、スワップなどの金融派生商品）などを活用しているため、取引規模は純資産をはるかに上回っているとされている。
