Personal experience: LG cell phones have a 1 year collect and return policy under the insurance purchased with the phone - they sent the new phone, no postage cost to me, along with the receipt, the ship-back label (no cost to me) and a strip of tape to reseal the box to return the damaged phone to them.

for a period of 1 year, buyer is responsible for returning goods to vendor/manufacturer for repair

Explanation:
As opposed to the 'collect and return' option, which suggests that the vendor/manufacturer will collect and return any goods requiring repair, 'carry-in' seems to mean that the buyer is responsible for getting any goods requiring repair to the vendor/manufacturer. This could mean sending by mail or physically taking the goods there himself (more likely if you've bought something from a local store). It would seem logical that the buyer would also have to cover the cost of getting the goods back, or will simply go and collect them himself.

This site describes a 2-year carry-in performance guarantee for a small appliance:
Double the manufacturer warranty on your new appliance and get full coverage through the second year of ownership. This plan covers all parts and labor charges related to any fuctional service call during the coverage period. Simply carry-in your small appliance to any of our store locations and/or to a authorized service center.
