no podia/era incapaz de valorar su poesia
Como en espagnol "estimar" puede tener otras connotaciones, y "to appreciate" en ingles generalmente significa "valorar," me sentiria mas comoda alejandome de la traduccion literal...deep meaning translation is always your best bet, especially when translating literature :-) Good luck!
