Brilliant - this is a great help -as are both suggestions above from Armorel and Paul
Alison MacG May 20, 2009:
ear trumpet/listening funnel? Here's something in English (not exactly the same context, but related) mentioning both ideas.

OUTDOOR EXHIBITS
Discovery Park
The Discovery Park is a ‘Science Playground’ of large-scale interactive exhibits designed to help visitors explore themes of force, movement and sound, in a way that is always fully ‘hands-on’, and sometimes ‘feet-on’ too.
Big Ear A giant hearing aid or ‘ear trumpet’ that works without electricity. Use the large funnel to listen in to sounds from elsewhere in the Centre. DO NOT SHOUT INTO THIS EXHIBIT — IT IS FOR
LISTENING ONLY! (page 11)

ear trumpet

My, what big ears you have! Also known as an "ear horn"... A kind of primitive hearing aid, but perhaps a larger version could be used by the kids.

You know what they say: 'Talk softly and carry a big ear trumpet.'

A "Hörrohr" is an ear trumpet:

Baumtelefon und Hörrohr: Der Schwerter Wald soll einen Naturlehrpfad bekommen
Höhepunkt sollen aber einzelne große Attraktionen sein, wie der 70 Zentimeter große bewegliche Lauschtrichter. Mit ihm kann man in die Landschaft hören und je nach Richtung einzelne Klang-Szenarien erleben, mal den Wald, mal die Straße, mal die Spaziergänger.

listening funnel

"Ear trumpet" sounds a bit antiquated to me.

From the natural (drinking water) well via the Pythagorasbecher and the water xylophone to the listening funnel, experience up-close the diverse effects and impressions of water.

thank you for your help. I like 'listening funnel' but on this occasion found 'ear trumpet' more appropriate

sound cone

It doesn't sound as antiquated as the 1st submission (which, by the way, is accurate nonetheless) and it sounds more English than the 2nd submission (the reference used is a poor-sounding translation, not an original English text), and it is also a technically accurate translation of the term.

I should add that a sound cone is a simple device made by kids.
Example sentence:

We used the sound cone to amplify the sound of the ocean waves.

Note from asker:
many thanks for providing this information. I wish I could have used it but think it might not have been right for a permanent very large device
