The problem is that "Putzwänden" has a footnote that says that the translation shoud be "grated lining". I can't believe that this is correct - what do you think?

...in all of the architectural texts I have seen during the past 13 years, "Putzwände" equals plastered walls. The "grated lining" does not make any sense in this context; if the author means anything other than "Putzwände" he/she should say that in the German and use a different term for whatever he/she means, imho....
of course, we all know that authors of such descriptive texts love to either get totally freaky about intellectualizing the described object; it is also possible that the German text is something like an attempt to shorten/straighten out a text written in English by someone who is not a native speaker -- that may explain why the "grated lining" is left behind the German word in parentheses....

...uhmmmm.... just working on such an intellectualized horror text -- as a footnote is what i meant, standard would be parentheses...

: But w/ Kim's proviso re. odd footnote and if he's right, then a qualification on Helen's lines? ...wänden in combination with ...platten does sugg. the Wände are Platten or at least, sections, too, not entire walls. @Leander, cn you get pics/details?
