It may be just me who has a mental block, but I just don't get 'les premières'. Any help with untangling this gratefully received.

the former
"Les premières...les dernières..." can mean "the former ...the latter...". In this case, "les premières" seems to refer back to "une Partie" although in the plural. To make it clearer, "une Partie" and "les premières" could be translated as "Party X".

: What else could it be in the given context? I have translated so many contracts and every time I see this term, it is translated as "the former".

those who are first will do their best to
sounds oK but I'm not sure it makes total sense.

: IMHO, this wording sounds very clumsy and awkward. I prefer to stick with simplicity and the simple answer of "the former".
