ways of life that the planet, society and individual can support in the long term
"Sustainable lifestyles" is used in this context in reference to the aim of lowering current perceived "desirable" living standards in certain parts of the world so as to permit the simultaneous increase in the basic living standards of a greater percentage of the world's population.
Simply put, if more people live in a sustainable manner, more people can live.

I should have mentioned at this concept embraces ecology: a healthy person on a healthier planet. If we don't radically change our way of living and our habits, our health, and the health of the planet are in danger.

two buzz words
Both of these words have been used more and more in the last forty or so years in the United States and Europe, and both took on a new meaning since that period. The word 'sustainable" is the more contraversial of the two, especially since the recent enhanced controversy about Global Warming.
Sustainable is used to mean that which can be sustained. It is a buzz word, or perhaps better said a form of technical jargon which means meeting certain ecological or green criteria as defined by the United Nations, certain academic or government agencies. I believe it was introduced as a technical term in the 1960s to mean using less energy, and to use instead things which are classified by some agencies as renewable resources.
Lifestyles also was redefined in the same period along with the slogan "Think global, act local." The local in lifestyle is not merely the local community, but the individual. It is the style, or mode, of the individual's use of what some deem limited and/or diminishing natural resources.
