Guidance on Issues of Scope

An issue of scope is one that determines eligibility for certification. In other words, a certification body shall be satisfied that the fishery is eligible to enter a full assessment against the MSC standard by determining the answer to any questions posed by an issue of scope.

There are two key issues of scope that are contained within the MSC standard which were formerly scored during a full assessment of a fishery for certification. These are:

a) A fishery shall not be conducted under a controversial unilateral exemption to an international agreement.
b) A fishery shall not use destructive fishing practices such as poisons or dynamite.
