French term

arête plumeuse

French to English Other Botany Herbal medicine plants
Jeune rameau rigide, non sarmenteux, creux et glabre ; feuilles opposées composées, imparipennées à 5 ou 7 folioles, ovales-lancéolées, entières, pédicellées, vertes au-dessus, glauques en dessous ; fleurs groupées en panicules à l’extrémité des rameaux, possédant 4 sépales pétaloïdes blancs presque glabres, à bord tomenteux et de nombreuses étamines ; carpelles comprimés, glabres, à arête plumeuse.

As per my last a description of Clematis recta, this time what is arete plumeuse?

feathery or plumose ridge

See this excellent Fr/En botany glossary. Plumose or feathery depending on register, of course.

agree Rachel Fell : I see it's the styles (different variety, but similar seed head): http://www-saps.plantsci.cam.ac.uk/trees/clematis.htm

Thanks Rachel. I did a load of plant monographs last year. It took me hours to pin down all the botanical terms.
disagree liz askew : I fail to see how "ridge" relates to clematis. Even in Rachel's ref. I can see no ref. to "ridge". only "styles".
