Für die Abwicklung der 3D-Geometrie in die Ebene ist es erforderlich, formgebende Elemente einzufügen, die eine Materialanhäufung oder -ausdünnung vermeiden.

The overall context is technical textiles.

I have found "development" or "mapping [onto a plane]". Can anybody confirm this term or suggest another translation?
