agree Audra deFalco (X) : I agree, but 'home care' might be misconstrued as someone who helps you care for your actual home. But a good response :)

This is the term I have heard over the years, and having known some, who referred to themselves as such. Thanks.

read my reference more carefully. My friend is a professional paid carer who works for the Council.
agree Thomas Roberts : carers can be paid professionals (at least in the UK) and are not necessarily family members

Thank you Thomas. In fact "Carer" is an official term for a paid professional. It does not refer to family members.

"Whether you have decided to seek In-Home care for your parent(s) or you believe a nursing home is best, there are questions you should ask..."

An in-home caregiver doesn't just help the elderly, by the way.

Homecare is purchased by the service user directly from independent home care agencies or as part of the statutory responsibility of social services departments of local authorities who either provide care by their own employees or commission services from independent agencies. Care is usually provided once or twice a day with the aim of keeping frail or disabled people healthy and independent though can extend to full-time help by a live-in nurse or carer.

Personal and home care aides—also called homemakers, caregivers, companions, and personal attendants—work for various public and private agencies that provide home care services. In these agencies, caregivers are likely supervised by a licensed nurse, social worker, or other non-medical managers. Aides receive detailed instructions explaining when to visit clients and what services to perform for them. However, personal and home care aides work independently, with only periodic visits by their supervisors. These caregivers may work with only one client each day or five or six clients once a day every week or every 2 weeks.
