Norwegian term

der elevens styrker blir ivaretatt

Norwegian to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy teaching methods
De fleste skolene i Grenland benytter MILL eller SMIL pedagogikk, med fokus på de mange intelligensene der elevens styrker blir ivaretatt.

- Does this mean "intelligences that build on the pupil's strengths" or is "build on" moving too far away?

where the pupil´s skills/strengths are utilized

They seem to be working with teaching methods based on Howard Gardner´s theory of Multiple Intelligences.

It´s basically about defining the strengths/intelligences in each student (linguistic, spatial, musical etc) and adapting and individualizing the teaching methods accordingly in order to boost the pupil´s confidence and help him/her learn in their own way.

As a note: As a science teacher I worked with this method and it was extremely rewarding :). (Sorry about the unnecessarily long explanation...)

where the pupil's strengths are taken into account

or where the pupil's strengths are considered
Example sentence:

"The best IEPs are based on sound knowledge of the child, take account of pupils' strengths and interests, state realistic timescales, are linked to resources in school, and involve parents."

neutral Anna Grynfeld Smith : I think "taken into account" and "considered" sounds a bit too passive. If they are indeed working with multiple intelligences, the teachers are supposed to ensure that the pupils use their strengths in an active way. AtoQ:Wasn´t sure about NOR phrase.

I stand over my interpretration of "ivaretatt" here. I am also curious why you didn't rate your confidence level higher than you did
agree lingo_montreal : I have no problem seeing "taken into account" as an ACTIVE element in shaping the curriculum. To me, you ACTIVELY consider the student's needs and abilities, and these ACTIVELY shape your decisions regarding what and how to teach.
