German term

Kursbuch

Discussion

Horst Huber (X) Feb 24, 2011:
Kursbuch, before Enzensberger, was just the "Fahrplan" of the railroad. "Timetable" is completely different. There must be so many more than 29 000 (more likely millions) strategic plans out there. Maybe this firm wanted to be different. There are also very many references to programs etc titled "Setting a" or "Setting the course", and it might be worth thinking of. One of the teachers here brought a "Phrasendreschmaschine" to class to make a point.
philgoddard Feb 22, 2011:
Out of pure selfishness, I didn't, because I thought my answer was unlikely to overtake Andrew's in popularity. Anyway, his is fine - there are lots of different things you could call it.
Sarah Bessioud Feb 22, 2011:
@ Phil You should post that as an answer!
philgoddard Feb 22, 2011:
Playbook is another possibility - I think enough Europeans know what that means.

agree Helen Shiner : Finally the chance to use some Important Capitals/Corporate Plan might also work (without the Strategic bit, strategy perhaps being implied).

They can be quite effective if used in moderation, especially 'The'.
agree 784512 (X) : This is a good all-encompassing term, for both British AND American English. I like both this answer and Steffen's, though, so have 'agreed' on both.

(Strategic) Roadmap

"Roadmap" is also often used in the context of strategic planning.

agree Kim Metzger : Or strategy roadmap

Yes, that would work just as well.
agree J Fox : definitely Roadmap

agree 784512 (X) : Quite nice and figurative, though perhaps more US English? Can't decide between your answer and Andrew's, so will agree on both.

I believe usage is rather industry-specific in this case - there's a lot of talk about "roadmaps" in IT, for instance.

agree Textklick : I prefer roadmap. It's something that you read about and hear about a lot, irrespective of the sector: http://business-docs.co.uk/document-templates/strategy-roadm...

guidebook

Although the contents of the book may concern strategic planning and objectives, there is nothing in the word "Kursbuch" that is so specific.

A Kursbuch is a book that usually accompanies and guides a student along with the hope that he/she reaches certain learning goals. In a similar way, this book is intended to guide managers along in the hope (I would imagine) that the objectives contained within are met.

agree casper (X) : Kursbuch der Firma = company guidebook or corporate guidebook
