sorry it cannot be "external employee" since an employee is hired by the company where he performs his duty and is compensated by the very same company. - Contractor could be a company or an individual not being on the payroll. And SAP using "external employee" regularly doesn't make it right either.

It seems that all the translation proposals seek to give terms of specific definiton, while the text itself seeks to keep it vague. "External" or maybe "outside" might be used?

Where I used to work, they were broken down into "captives" (employees) and "contractors."

Roland, I agree, and that is the idea to pursue - for the statistics in this context it does not seem important what type of external employee works for the company, but to give a global figure of the whole staff.

It's either contractors, temporary staff or leased staff. But they are all not employed by the company where they do their work.

Steffen has argued that the distinction between 'contractor' and 'contract worker' is spurious. If you decide to go for 'contractor', you may wish to prefix it with 'outside'.
'outside contractors' comes in at 2.5m hits. By comparison, the translated-sounding combination with 'external' comes in at 250,000.

The source term seems to be a shortened variant of "Mitarbeiter von Fremdfirmen", which are usually referred to as "contractors". This being said, Andrew's take might also be correct but there's a difference between contractors (employed by external/third-party providers regularly working on the site) and temp(orary) staff hired from agencies. Please clarify with client if possible.
