French term

video

French to English Marketing General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters holiday brochure
This is in a list of activities for teens at a resort. The list is "mixage, hip-hop, video, cinema".

I think it must mean "film production" because it is in the singular so would be surprised if it was just "videos" - has anyone come across the word used on its own like this before? Does anyone have any views on the subject?

TIA.

Discussion

Stéphanie Soudais Mar 23, 2011:
Vidéo To me it can't be anything else than a workshop where you learn to use a camera/make films etc. The singular form is right because it is a discipline (like le théâtre, la danse, la vidéo, la photo...)
cc in nyc Mar 23, 2011:
I'm with writeaway... If the client cannot provide more information, then it should be left as "video" – IMO, that is.
HelenG (asker) Mar 23, 2011:
Hi Writeaway, Actually, from dictionary references and reading, I already thought this had to be film production. But I was just concerned that video in the singular might also refer to 'gaming' or 'music clips' without me being aware of it. No one seems to be able to confirm that is the case. I don't make a living out of 'guessing' but do like to cover all the bases. And obviously, I will translate it as I actually believe it should be translated and include a note to the client.
writeaway Mar 23, 2011:
Thanks Helen I really think you will have the most success if you ask the client what this involves. You aren't really free to make a personal decision. Or you could just chicken out and leave it as video....... ;-)
HelenG (asker) Mar 23, 2011:
Hi Writeaway, I certainly didn't intend to start a guessing game. I thought it might be common usage that I was unaware of. Admittedly, there isn't much context but I preferred to check first given the long list of points I already have to submit to the client. There is no other context or reference to it, otherwise I would have included it as I normally do.
writeaway Mar 23, 2011:
isn't there any hint in the rest of your document? Do they explain it somewhere else in the doc?
And if there isn't, doesn't it make more sense to ask the client instead of enduring this guess-o-rama of possible solutions? I mean, either leave it as video or find out exactly what it is. A bit of accuracy is always a good thing in a descriptive brochure, I'd have thought.
cc in nyc Mar 23, 2011:
That's pretty convincing... ...since it includes all the activities mentioned in Helen's text.

Possible support for your film production idea Club Med Passworld® (from 11 to 17 years old):
This exclusive area dedicated to teenagers is a playground for different forms of self-expression. You are free to do what you want, when you want: creative, sporting, or artistic activities, including hip-hop, video production, and sound mixing; as well as cinema, theatre, or dance classes etc - or you can quite simply enjoy doing nothing.

Vague... Perhaps your Englsih translation should be as vague as the original French? Unless, of course, there's more detail elsewhere in the French text.

probably means making a (hip-hop) video/filming as opposed to watching a film which is here indicated by 'cinema'
HelenG (asker) Mar 23, 2011:
It is a high-end family resort... where the teens clubs aren't just teens clubs.
cc in nyc Mar 23, 2011:
More context, please... Um, is this a specialized resort? For instance, are the kids shooting films ("cinema") or are they watching films?
HelenG (asker) Mar 23, 2011:
It came into mine but... Just like film/music videos, wouldn't it be in the plural?
Travelin Ann Mar 23, 2011:
CC's suggestion is the first thing that came to my mind, as well.

videography / video-making

I'm pretty sure this would be the actual activity, otherwise I think the FR would have emphasized the 'jeux' rather than the 'vidéo' part.

The term is used, in the singular like this in both FR and EN to refer to the activity of making videos, which fits perfectly with the other items on your list.

The only thing that concerns me slightly is that it is followed by 'cinéma' — in this day and age, I'd be surprised if the latter involved actual film-making (especially if video is available as a cheaper and faster alternative!). So it remains to be seen what that might be — and here it does seem more likely to be cinema as a spectator, i.e. film screenings, or going out to the cinema. This is the one (rather passive) activity that sits a little uneasily for me with the others in the list.

agree Sheila Wilson : mixage = DIY music, so I think video here is the same idea.

Merci, Michel !
agree Helen Shiner : not videography for this sort of text. Video production or video making, as you suggest, would be better.

Thanks, Helen! No, indeed, the register wouldn't be right here.

video

In the absence of any more specific information in the French text (or from the client), I would stick with the ambiguous term "video."
