French term

intelligence laborieuse

French to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters story set in France 1730s
This is an 18th and 19th century expression. I have an idea of what it means but I am not happy with the dictionary defintions of arduous, or diffiucult, industrious or hard working intelligence.

The sentence is:

Je voudrais que nous fassions de xxx un temple dedie a l'amour, a l'amitie et l'intellifence laborieuse.

This is set in the enlightenment and the sentence is in that context, and spoken by one of the protagonists in the story. I think there is an English phrase for the this idea but its stuck somewhere in the back of my mind-- so any help is appreciated.

They are lovers, but they are talking about turning XXX into a temple dedicated to love, friendship and intelligence laborieuse. They have a building and the money to do this and are enarmored with the idea of doing that.
AllegroTrans Apr 9, 2011:
asker, a bit more context please Can you let us know what xxxx is? Are these people lovers? Are they building a "thing" or a relationship?

the pursuit of enlightenment

I think that "laborieuse" is being active in doing something (i.e. the pursuit of) and "intelligence" here means "enlightenment"
Note from asker:
Do you know if intelligence is use in French to refer to enlightenment? Or would this be unique to this author?
