French term

poussée invalidante

French to English Medical Medical (general) MS symptoms
I know what this means, but am looking for the precise medical term. Here is the context: (pardon lack of accents, am in a hurry!)

....en premiere intention car la patiente presente une sclerose en plaques remittente severe d'evolution rapide et definie par:
2 poussees invalidantes au plus au cours d'une annee

Clearly these are periods during which the sufferer is incapacitated... but is there a commonly used term for this?

Many thanks,

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Yes, I do feel that the idea of a 'flare-up' is what was required here...in the sense of the existing condition suddenly becoming worse and causing the sufferer more problems than usual. Thanks to all contributors. "

disabling relapse

A relapsing and remitting course is highly characteristic of most forms of multiple sclerosis.
