Ok, before everyone rushes in with the translation *mess*, my problem is this:
I need to differentiate between *quadrato ufficiali*, which I have on good authority can be translated as officers' mess and mensa, which I think is also translated as mess.
DIMENSIONI LOCALI QUADRATI E MENSE
This is from a detailed description of all the areas on board a Naval unit.
Help?
TIA

crew mess/crew mess hall
I would suggest to contrast the officers' mess with crew mess or crew mess hall. For the most part I have found the crew mess without the genitive although officers' is always with the appostrophe.

wardroom/mess
In the British and Commonwealth navies the officers' eating area is not called a mess, even on land. It is the wardroom.
You would be safe using mess for the non-commissioned officers' and sailors' eating areas.

cafeteria
During a summer program in Italy, we ate in a Mensa each day. While it can be translated as a mess hall, it was essentially a cafeteria.
