Discussion

Laura Friend Nov 12, 2011:
Good point, Eugsam. What would be your suggestion, then?
Eugene Samsonov Nov 12, 2011:
You guys seem to forget it is a Russianism we are dealing here. Asker, are you trying to interpret the text in good old English style, or give a literal "translation"?
Laura Friend Nov 12, 2011:
Re: "Asker: не много ли?" But "land-related legal relationships," which you suggested, is even longer and, in my opinion, a bit awkward -- not that we're dealing with a very sleek formulation to begin with! ;-) I do think we need to include both "land" and "legal relation(ship)s", so as to convey the content of the original phrase, and to try to correspond with legal parlance actually in use. I would be thrilled if anything better were to come up, because I have been grappling with "правоотношения" myself recently.

land law relationships

"Land law" is an accepted legal term. Most hits seem to correspond to UK usage. I will not attempt to address the relationship, if any, to "real estate law."

On the Russian side, "правоотношение" does not appear in many of my RU-EN dictionaries, legal or otherwise. Борисенко & Саенко (РУССО, 2002/2005) have it as "jural (legal) relation (relationship)". One potentially productive example from Б&С is "гражданское правоотношение" as "relationship of civil law." Using this as a template, we may say "relationship of land law (land law relationship)", "relationship of pledge law (pledge law relationship)", etc.

I will reply to this in the discussion area.
Example sentence:

At the present time, land law relationships are quite complex and require the interference of legal experts.

Note from asker:
и land, и law relationships - не много ли? может быть, land-related legal relationships?
