Swiss-German brochure explaining the obligations of parents under the Swiss school system: "Sie müssen Ihre Kinder zur Erfüllung der Schulpflicht anhalten, die Zeugnisse der Kinder einsehen und unterzeichnen, Bewilligungen für Urlaub frühzeitig einholen, Selbstdispensationen vorgängig melden und bei Absenzen den Grund angeben."
This has been translated in the past as "self-dispensation" which means nothing to me as an English speaker - can anyone explain what it actually means and come up with a good way of expressing it in English?

"You must apply for exceptional leave of absence well in advance, stating the reason."

Alternatively (to differentiate from school-approved):
"You must *notify* us in the case of self-certified absence well in advance, stating the reason."
There is also the snappy Latin form 'exeat' (plural 'exeats'):
The Latin word exeat ("he/she may leave") is most commonly used to describe a period of absence from a centre of learning.

at parental discretion
Parents may absent their child from school for a limited number of half-days at their own discretion (see 'Selbstdispensationen'). In such cases, we must be informed well in advance of the relevant dates and the reason.
The point being that the circumstances are not vetted and *no authorisation* is required.

authorised absence from school
That is what I can think of in the UK.

A child registered at a school can legally miss school only in very limited circumstances. These include:
•when the child is too ill to attend
•when the school has authorised the absence beforehand
If a child is missing school without good reason, schools and local authorities have a number of legal powers that they can use.

: 'Bewilligungen für Urlaub' would also have to be authorised. Selbstdispensationen are self-certified.
