Devo ammettere che è alquanto ardua questa domanda.
Dunque, qui si parla di ragazze che hanno subito una forte delusione amorosa, mi pare, no?
Le mie interpretazioni, in base al significato di "impatient" erano almeno due:
1) si era sempre sentita adeguata (competent lo tradurrei così) nonostante non tollerasse l'idea (perchè magari questo la escludeva dalle altre che invece si riunivano a struggersi davanti alla tazza di cioccolata)
2) si era sempre sentita adeguata e non vedeva l'ora di dimostrarlo. (impatient)
