French term

compte-poids

French to English Tech/Engineering Nuclear Eng/Sci Metal recovery

In the above what is compte-poids? - seems to be some sort of record of how much metal the titulaire recovers (from glass in this case).

TIA for any input

Discussion

Nikki Scott-Despaigne Jul 10, 2013:
"Metal weight account" seems to be used more commonly in non-native English sources.
Daryo Jul 9, 2013:
"metal weight account" sounds about right
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Jul 9, 2013:
I'm coming round to "weight account" too, or even "metal weight" account.
philgoddard Jul 9, 2013:
The only thing is that all the references I can find for "weight account" in this context are translations. I might post it as an answer if no one can come up with anything else, as it does seem the obvious translation.
Clifford Marcus (asker) Jul 9, 2013:
the titulaire is the contractor, contracted to extract the metal for xxx. I think weight account must be right.
philgoddard Jul 9, 2013:
From Googling It looks like the hyphen might be a mistake and it's "compte poids", meaning "weight account". Is XXX being credited with the value of the metal?
philgoddard Jul 9, 2013:
Can you give us the full context, please? What is the titulaire the owner of? Who is their relationship with XXX?

French term (edited): compte poids métal

metal account

I think if you drop the hyphen then you find a more fluid reading of "gestion du compte poids métal". I think the métal goes rather with the "poids" than with "compte". If you read it this way, then you might consider "metal account" as appropriate. This means accepting that the EN term places the emphasis on the material, rather on the weight but that the terms match.
Low confidence level nonetheless, but I'm posting the suggestion as I find EN original sources for this one, which is not the case for "weight account".

At a pinch, then "precious metal account" might do it. Again, going against my own suggestion of being wary of EN versions of sites and "weight account", here's an EN version of a Swiss site which uses "precious metal account", another possibility.

OK, so when you post on ProZ, you can put your foot in it! My first source here is NOT an EN original, but an Armenian one.
That said, I stand by my suggestion. I'll be back with other sources. Hang on a sec...

Might this be it?
http://info.goldavenue.com/info_site/in_glos/in_glos_metalac...

Many banks and bullion dealers offer metal account facilities to their customers, who may be substantial traders or small jewellers. The advantage of metal accounts is that gold is not normally delivered, thus occasionally avoiding sales tax. Metal account business in Switzerland increased enormously in the early 1980s when gold deliveries were taxed for a time. Metal account gold is normally ‘unallocated’ so the client is an unsecured creditor.

About my last source : http://info.goldavenue.com/

"The GoldAvenue Gold Encyclopaedia is maintained by the world's leading precious metals consultancy, Gold Field Mineral Services (GFMS). Their contribution in updating the Encyclopaedia on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis builds and expands upon the work of gold jewelry expert Irena Podleska, and the acknowledged gold expert, Timothy Green, in particular his reference book, "The Gold Companion"."

Is that better? More convincing?

Metal Account Management

Precious metals are central to investment portfolios and industrial production.

G. C. Metals Limited can set-up metal accounts on behalf of those customers who do not wish to take delivery of their refined metals, allowing them to sell their reclaimed material at their option. This ensures that our customers are able to take advantage of fluctuations in precious metal prices and sell when prices are higher.

agree philgoddard : Your references aren't really relevant, as they relate to investment in precious metals. But I think this is still an acceptable answer; "weight account" is another, and at least you understand the difference between singular and plural in French :-

Or even "metal account" which scraps the term "weight".
