I'm not sure if this is what you are after, but a "surfait au voltige" is a "vaulting surcingle" in English.

sorry-can't find the exact term but this is the idea. apparently more than two grips are possible.

Il a d'abord marché au pas, au trot puis au galop. Lorsque le cheval se déplaçait à un rythme régulier, le voltigeur a pu commencer ses acrobaties. Il se tenait au cheval à l'aide d'un "surfait de voltige": ce sont deux poignées attachées à l'encolure du cheval.

there is a picture on the above site, showing those grips though the exact word is not used...they talk about straps but grip would be right...It\'s at the front of the saddle as you can see in the picture
