français term

charges

français vers anglais Médecine Médecine (général) materials for dental products
Hello

I am currently translating a report on a material that may be used in dental products. This material has been compared to other composites.

I would appreciate any help with the term "charges":

La distribution granulométrique des charges semble favorable, avec des charges plus petites et des charges plus grosses mais ne dépassant pas 3-‐4 m.
Or, plus les charges sont petites, plus l’aptitude au polissage et les propriétés optiques augmentent, mais avec une augmentation de la viscosité.
La valeur élevée du Rt du XXXX [name of composite]peut s’expliquer par l’arrachage de charges lors du polissage.

Thank you!

Is it just "loads"

I want to be sure!

Hi, this occurred to me after posting too:)
Tony M Feb 4, 2014:
charges I don't know if it is applicable in your context, but one common translation for 'charges' is 'fillers' — i.e. inert substances added to a compound in order to bulk it out or in some other way change its properties (mechanical rather than chemical).

fillers

Encouraged by your research, I'm going to submit this as an answer, albeit with a modestly low confidence level, since this is well outside my specialist fields!
Note from asker:
Hi, I think this is outside my specialist field as well as it is not strictly medical!

Merci, Joanne !
agree B D Finch : It seems filler can be composed of aggregate and nano-particles. Perhaps a visit to the dentist is called for?

Thanks, B! Err... no, I don't think so, thanks awfully... ;-)

aggregate(s)

The same principle and term as concrete, but finer (and, one hopes, aseptic). Granulometry here is "particle size".
