German term

Auswaschungen

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Off-road driving
Ein Picnic am Meer, dann wird das gerade geübte bei Steilauffahrten, Verschränkungen und Auswaschungen in die Praxis umgesetzt.

This is from an agenda for an off-road driving tour. At this point, it is talking about driver training and how to deal with difficult terrain.

Looking on forums such as http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/auswaschungen-an-den-hinteren... and http://www.e-klasse-forum.de/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=... it is obviously something to do with tyres. It sounds like it could be erosion or air loss, but that doesn't fit the context here.

(Verschränkungen, by the way, is axle articulation.)

Thanks!

P.S. The existing Proz entry for this term is from a different context.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Mar 21, 2014:
Steilauffahrten, Verschränkungen und Auswaschungen has nothing to do with tire conditions. It relates to the eroded surface of the outdoor terrain to drive on, hence erosion.
Marc Rothman (asker) Mar 20, 2014:
Answer to Steffen: yes, I think you're probably right.
Marc Rothman (asker) Mar 20, 2014:
Reply to Oliver: good question, silly of me not to have said. The preceding sentence reads:

Bei den Steilabbrüchen erklären wir allen Teilnehmern die richtige Bedienung der vier Differentialsperren des Autos, zeigen die Bedienung der Geländereduktion und erläutern, was im Gelände alles zu beachten ist.
philgoddard Mar 20, 2014:
Yes, that's a possibility. The dictionary gives "leaching" as a translation, which is the same kind of idea - maybe "washed-out roads". Verschränkung must also refer to terrain or driving conditions.
Steffen Walter Mar 20, 2014:
Terrain rather than tyres I would think that this refers to eroded slopes or the like. See, for instance, http://mostateparks.com/trails/st-joe-state-park?type=atv ("The wooded trails vary in difficulty, from a relatively flat earthen type surface to steep, rocky, eroded slopes.").
philgoddard Mar 20, 2014:
"Axle articulation" doesn't seem to fit the very limited context you've given us.
Andrew Bramhall Mar 20, 2014:
dann wird das gerade geübte What is it that is being carried out/ practised?

Note from asker:
Yes, I think this it. It's the gully left in the ground by water which has since dried up. This fits the context.

How I understand it. And I reckon the Verschränkungen refer to torsion of the vehicle body.
Note from asker:
You're certainly right about the second term, and it's looking increasingly likely you're right about the first one too. Thanks!

Scalloping/Feathering

Based on your links, how about this:

Scalloping/Feathering: Scalloping, which some techs call feathering, is when all the tread blocks on one shoulder develop a wear pattern in which one block edge is higher than the other, leaving a set of raised edges on the leading or trailing edge of each block. Running your fingers lightly along the tread blocks produces an unmistakable “flutter” as you brush over the raised edges. The earliest sign of this kind of wear is often an unpleasant change in the noise the tire produces – the high hum of the “tire song” often changes to a loud growl as the edges strike pavement. This is generally caused by incorrect camber, and can be thought of as pretty much the larval stage of the one shoulder wear described above - it's just possible that you've caught it early enough that if you correct the alignment, the tire just might “wear back in” to a more normal pattern over time. Scalloping is often indirectly caused by an impact that knocks the alignment out.

It sounds like what the guy is talking about in your "motor-talk" link. Got to admit, though, this is a new one on me, both in German AND English.

Well, I went with tires. If it has to do with landscape, then you are right, I am off-context.
Note from asker:
I think you're spot on as to what the term means in the forums, BUT I think those forum discussions might be a red herring. I'm not sure your definition fits the context I've posted.

erorions (illuviations)

The process of removal of materials from geological or soil horizons is called eluviation or leaching. There is a difference in the usage of this term in geology and soil science. In soil science, eluviation is the transport of soil material from upper layers of soil to lower levels by downward precipitation of water across soil horizons, and accumulation of this material (illuvial deposit) in lower levels is called illuviation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eluviation

Illuvium is material displaced across a soil profile, from one layer to another one, by the action of rainwater. The removal of material from a soil layer is called eluviation. The transport of the material may be either mechanical or chemical. The process of deposition of illuvium is termed illuviation. [1] It is a water-assisted transport in a basically vertical direction, as compared to alluviation, the horizontal running water transfer. The resulting deposits are called illuvial deposits. Cutans are a type of illuvial deposit. [2]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuviation

Valley or stream erosion occurs with continued water flow along a linear feature. The erosion is both downward, deepening the valley, and headward, extending the valley into the hillside, creating head cuts and steep banks. In the earliest stage of stream erosion, the erosive activity is dominantly vertical, the valleys have a typical V cross-section and the stream gradient is relatively steep. When some base level is reached, the erosive activity switches to lateral erosion, which widens the valley floor and creates a narrow floodplain. The stream gradient becomes nearly flat, and lateral deposition of sediments becomes important as the stream meanders across the valley floor. In all stages of stream erosion, by far the most erosion occurs during times of flood, when more and faster-moving water is available to carry a larger sediment load. In such processes, it is not the water alone that erodes: suspended abrasive particles, pebbles and boulders can also act erosively as they traverse a surface, in a process known as traction.[11]
Bank erosion is the wearing away of the banks of a stream or river. This is distinguished from changes on the bed of the watercourse, which is referred to as scour. Erosion and changes in the form of river banks may be measured by inserting metal rods into the bank and marking the position of the bank surface along the rods at different times.[12]

Off-roading is the activity of driving or riding a vehicle on unsurfaced roads or tracks, made of materials such as sand, gravel, riverbeds, mud, snow, rocks, and other natural terrain.
:
Off-road vehicle use on public land has been criticized by some members of the U.S. government[3] and environmental organizations including the Sierra Club and The Wilderness Society.[4][5] They have noted several consequences of illegal ORV use such as pollution, trail damage, erosion, land degradation, possible species extinction,[6] and habitat destruction[7][8] which can leave hiking trails impassable.[9]

disagree Cilian O'Tuama : "erorions (illuviations)"? And it's about off-road vehicle testing, not geology.
