Portuguese term

hidraulicidade

Portuguese to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Em 2013 somou‑se a este efeito a elevada hidraulicidade.
Estes dois fatores, conjugados com os preços internacionais dos combustíveis, conduziram a uma forte redução da produção de energia elétrica pelas centrais térmicas, em particular as centrais a gás natural (com consequências significativas ao nível dos consumos de gás natural).

Please correct me if I am wrong, but is this just F)/%ing stupid term for rain fall?

You're absolutely right, Doug, This happens a lot. Above all if the original document was not in PT or not written by a PT-speaking company/author.
Douglas Bissell (asker) Jun 24, 2014:
Mario,
I understand your question and you are right in your assumption. Sometimes though the original is just not well written and some people like to put in big (sometimes eroneous) words. Our job is sometimes to put the text back on track for the readers. I do appreciate your input, thtis is how we bounce ideas off each other and try to hone our skills. Um abraço, Douglas
Mario Freitas Jun 23, 2014:
It could be Rainfall, but I'm afraind the author would have used "pluviosidade" then. There must be a reason to use "hidraulicidade" instead.
Douglas Bissell (asker) Jun 23, 2014:
Cliente response “De facto, hidraulicidade, no setor energético, aplica-se à existência ou não de água no sistema, estando correlacionado com a existência de pluviosidade”

Hydraulicity Full Definition of HYDRAULICITY: the capacity which hydraulic cements or their ingredients have for hardening under water

Mario Freitas Jun 20, 2014:
IMO, Almost any adjective will accept the suffix "ity", and it won't necessarily be in a dictionary. The language allows it. When this prefix is added, it usually means the capacity or ability to...
Nevertheless, I found many references to "hydraulicity", and I wouldn't be afraid of using it in a translation.
I know, Douglas! But that's what "hidraulicidade" means...
Douglas Bissell (asker) Jun 20, 2014:
Teresa,

The context is power generation, not cement :-(
Hidraulicidade??? = Qualidade das argamassas e cimentos hidráulicos.

I think you are RIGHT Douglas, that whole passage is ridiculously verbose. Did you translate 'energia eléctrica' as electricity? It's about time Portugal/Portuguese had the equivalent of a 'plain English' campaign, because a lot of the texts I translate from Portuguese end up with fewer letters in the target than in the source...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Please note that these two terms are not the same thing and should not be used as a corect translation :-)"

hydroelectric generating capacity

I think the term in PT was used incorrectly. Even in PT the meaning is the same: the capacity which hydraulic cements or their ingredients have for hardening under water.

Also influencing the improvement was higher prices for hydro power generated in the Waikato River system, despite lower volumes of hydro power caused by low inflows.
By the end of the quarter, inflows to Lake Taupo had raised it to 100 percent of mean storage.
