German term
Hofrecht
German to English
Law/Patents
Law (general)
Will
Context:
I am translating a German will. On the second page, it says:
"Zu meinem Vermögen gehört kein Hof im Sinne des Höferechts".
Currently I have translated this as:
"No farm estate forms part of my assets in the sense of “Höferecht”.
I am planning to put a note about "Höferecht" to this effect:
1. Hofrecht
In the Holy Roman Empire, the lex familiae or ius curiae during the Middle Ages was the legislation concerning the relation between the free owner of an estate with both his free workers and his unfree serfs, as well as the legal relations among those employed at an estate. ...

Is this an acceptable solution, or is there an a better way to translate?
Thanks,
Anne

homestead act / homestead law
'homestead' (dwelling with surrounding land) is the equivalent what is understood as 'Hof' in German.
Homesteads are exempted from sale and execution by creditors in case of bankruptcy under US law.

Note from asker:
Thanks Gangels, I think your answer was the most helpful. However, in the end I opted to leave the "Höferecht" in German and added a note as follows: Höferecht-reference to an item of German Law, which historically dictates that in some German states a family farm will automatically go to the oldest male heir. |

: (AmE) homesteading law - arguably works in BrE as well.

primogeniture
(Höfeordnung, Höferecht) No part of my estate is to pass via primogeniture in the sense of the Primogeniture Rules (Höfeordnung).
Evidently this is the law regarding inheritance of farms in South Germany.

: While it could amount to that, don't see that as a valid translation of the term asked, as it's an over-translation, really;"Erstgeburtsrecht/Ältestenrecht" is primogeniture;
