French term

fausse déglutition

French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Letter reporting a death
I'm fine with "déglutition" - it's "fausse" that has me stumped here, could it be translated as "problematic"? or 'difficulties"?

Here's the rest of the text, for ref....

here is the full quote:

Complications
You might occasionally experience “food going down the wrong way” after breathing food into your respiratory tract, which is called aspiration. Some medical conditions cause problems with swallowing. People with dysphagia have problems swallowing and might experience pain or the aspiration of food into the larynx, lungs and windpipe. Food can become stuck in the respiratory tract and cause breathing difficulties and choking. Aspiration of food can lead to aspiration pneumonia, which can damage to the lungs and cause blockage, infection and swelling. Inflammation of the epiglottis,

What is aspiration?
Aspiration occurs whenever secretions, food or liquid goes down "the wrong pipe” and enters the airway or lungs. This often results in coughing or choking sensation. However, many individuals who aspirate do not sense the material going the wrong way. Aspirating material into the lungs may lead to pulmonary problems such as pneumonia.

neutral Drmanu49 : Fausse route is not mentioned but in any case, it would come under swallowing disorders or dysphagia.//my suggestion maybe not LOL but dysphagia certainly so!

See all my references....Your interpretation is too general, how could your suggestion provoke a serious asthma attack?

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : "fausse route" in one example of what can occur in "dysphasia".
1 hr
Yes, but my suggestion is backed up by the evidence, i.e. "aspiration" provokes a severe asthma attack.pneumonie de fausse déglutition = aspiration pneumonia
neutral Frank Foley : You and the Doc are both right, as the term occurs twice, in fact.

No Liz, they did NOT mention fausse-route which is specific.

Thank you Nikki.
neutral Frank Foley : Not in this context: the patient here had a specific accident, i.e. "FAIT une fausse déglutition". My apologies: the term is mentioned twice! Once as a "condition", and once as a "medical accident", so you're at least half right! :-)

I know I am right especially since fausse route is only one of the disorders in dysphagia that can cause a bout of asthma.

"While the prognosis for dysphagic stroke clients might might appear to be reasonably good, in most cases of neurodegenerative disease, dysphagia is an almost inevitable consequence.
