"But it continues to be reported." ????? Не понимаю что автор хочет сказать.

It reads with the further context ("А дальше?") So he said. And?
So he said. So what?
So he said. A mere statement. And?/A what now?/Ans so what?

Did you get the idea, Leigh? Это оборот в русском языке. Не могу найти его описания. It implies that there's nothing more to the action, nothing meaningful or important. Ну, заявил и заявил. Ну, сказал и сказал. Ну, увидел и увидел. - so that's what he did, and now what. Can be used with virtually any verb.
