French term

La desserte porte-linge

Non-PRO French to English Medical Medical: Instruments Hospital equipment catalo
Here is the entire phrase:

La desserte porte-linge est de série

Is it simply the 'towel bar' service/set?

Apparently it can be customised to take on different types of accessories.

TIA

Change log

Aug 3, 2016 21:30: Rachel Fell changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Aug 5, 2016 07:25: Tony M Created KOG entry

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Drmanu49, writeaway, Rachel Fell

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Tony M Aug 4, 2016:
@ Asker The fact it has been voted non-pro by 3 peers does not prevent you from closing the question and awarding points if you so wish.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 4, 2016:
@Liz "Desserte" is the term used for a trolley you might being to a table to serve desert and cheese from, for example. There is the idea of "serving" from the "dessserte", and almost always the idea that it is open (trays, shelves) and not closed in the way a cabinet would be. I see what you mean with cabinets on wheels, but that is not what "desserte" generally corresponds to.
Linda Brunet (asker) Aug 4, 2016:
Thanks everyone, very helpful. I don't know why this is non-pro, I'll try to change that so I can give points.
liz askew Aug 3, 2016:
sorry
porte-linge = linen

see here for desserte:
http://www.gifi.fr/366959-desserte-a-roulettes-blanche.html

it could even be a linen trolley
liz askew Aug 3, 2016:
1. porte-linge = "clothes" in general
2. desserte can = sideboard/cabinet

BTW

serviette = towel!
Note from asker:
Liz re serviette > 'towel', I was tired at the time but I actually did find 'towel bar' for this term in my research. Thank you for the link, so much easier when you have pictures in these types of docs.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I wouldn't expect a 'desserte' to be a cabinet, more usually some kind of trolley
28 mins
neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : cabinets on wheels can certainly be moved around, but it is generally in order to clean behind them, rather than to push them from place to palce to "serve" the linen, as you would a "dessserte", thus a trolley

Using Google images

Hello Linda,

A quick hint on how to fast-track this type of term. If you do a Google search with images, you will immediately recognise what is being described. It can take many shapes or forms, but I guess when you see this, you will have a few ideas for solutions in English :

And, as an idea of one translation tah immedaitely comes to mind, do the same search with "linen trolley", for example :

https://www.google.fr/search?q=linen trolley&biw=1920&bih=94...
Note from asker:
Thanks Nikki, I have tried that, sometimes it is helpful and sometimes not. Maybe I'll get better at it. And if I do find the image, I am still not always confident of the term. Thanks again for taking the time, this is not really one of my speciality area, I guess it shows.
