Russian term

крыша едет из-за игры

Russian to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Hello Fellow Linguists,
I wonder if anyone can help me get a better understanding of this phrase? It is part of a transcript of a dialogue between two women. There isn't much context to go on but one of the women is trying to reassure the other and says the following:

Так что не переживай, не расстраивайся – правильно сделала, потому что это люди, у которых крыша едет из-за игры, из-за ставок… это все потерянные люди (практически).

I thought the phrase might mean 'they have skin in the game' ie, to incur monetary risk to achieve a goal. Moreover, that they'd go to any length to achieve their aim/ throw money at the issue.

Could someone tell me if this is what is meant?
Many thanks in advance,
Nathalie
Change log

Aug 11, 2016 09:54: P.L.F. Persio changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): Mikhail Kropotov, El oso, P.L.F. Persio

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

agree Vera Klink : Yes, they're referring to gambling addiction here. The games could be poker, horse racing, or any game where bets are placed. The phrase "крыша едет" (literally: "roof is sliding"), is a very common way of saying that someone's going crazy.

to be away with the fairies

Someone who is away with the fairies is in such a dreamy state that they are not totally in touch with reality and give the impression of being slightly mad.
Example sentence:

It's no use trying to explain the problem to her - she's away with the fairies!

Peer comment(s):

neutral Igor Boyko : Disagree. Ответ никак не связан с играми.

ok
neutral Ilan Rubin (X) : This is more about forgetfulness than madness: you are in a dreamy state and immediately forget what you were told
