French term

mention

French to English Other Education / Pedagogy
From an environmental engineering firm (FRANCE), training for removal of contaminants, asbestos etc.
I'm not able to find a translation for "mention" as in:

• Amiante sans mention
• Plomb sans mention (crep)
• Plomb avec mention (DRIPP)

• DPE sans mention (diagnostic de performance énergétique)
• DPE avec mention

I have looked at some training sites but still can't find a translation.
Anyone who can help, thank you!

Philippa Smith Aug 21, 2017:
@Phil Lots of good links to show what the "mention" and "sans mention" are, but they still need a translation: basic and advanced should do the trick, Phil why don't you post them as an answer?
Anne Bohy Aug 19, 2017:
Décret du 24 décembre 2011 Cette notion de "mention" a été définie dans un décret. Vous trouverez tous les détails sur cette page : http://www.actu-environnement.com/ae/news/arrete-competences...
Philippa Smith Aug 18, 2017:
@Phil I think you might be right Phil, going by that link at any rate: all the courses are clearly for certification, so that can't be the solution. Basic and advanced makes sense, though why use those terms for them beats me!
philgoddard Aug 18, 2017:
Here's some context I think it may mean basic and advanced:
http://www.bureauveritas.fr/home/about-us/our-business/certi...
If you compare the two, "avec mention" seems to involve more wide-ranging knowledge.
I've changed the question category, since this is training rather than environmental technology.
Philippa Smith Aug 18, 2017:
@Marlene Accreditation and honours are not quite the same thing though: I'm not sure lead/asbestos removal training would result in honours. But it seems logical to have courses that you do so that you know how to perform removals (presumably cheaper) and those that confer professional accreditation. Can you tell from the rest of the text how broad the audience the courses target and/or the different prices?
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 18, 2017:
If in the training context it is describing a series of professional accreditations, then yes, it is in the ordinary sense of "mention". The term is in the GDT. ;-)
Marlene Blanshay (asker) Aug 18, 2017:
yes, i believe it means "with accreditation" or honours. French training uses somewhat different terms!
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Aug 18, 2017:
What type of document is this please?
Philippa Smith Aug 18, 2017:
certification/accreditation Not my field at all, but I'd say it could be referring to training courses with certification/accreditation, i.e. after doing them you're a certified lead remover or whatever, and courses that don't include certification. Does that sound like it could fit?

CREP certification without the optional DRIPP certification

In the context, the 'mention' is the presence of the DRIPP certification, which from reading the references supplied, is an optional or add-on element of the base DPE cert - the CREP. I am assuming you have clarified already what CREP + DRIPP stand for in your translation, if not then you will have to clarify what these are.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : I think this is incorrect. CREP certif "avec mention" describes a type/level of certification. DRIPP certif "sans mention" means certif but without a specific type/level. A diploma w/o mention in FR means the basic pass level, and not absence of certif.

disagree Anne Bohy : CREP et DRIPP ne concernent que le plomb. Cette notion de "mention" est valable pour toutes les certifications (amiante, études énergétiques), voir le lien que j'ai fourni dans la discussion.
