heronry

What's wrong with this? It has no specific implication of 'man-made reserve' or any other connotation, but is just like 'swannery', 'rookery' etc.

A nice, neat, maybe old-fashioned word....

heron nesting trees (area)

depending on context can be understood as "heron colony"

heron sanctuary

Since you say it is a type of area, not a specific type of vegetation the birds nest in, I would go with the term sanctuary.

I would also argue that the word \"sanctuary\" does not automatically imply intentional design. Sanctuary is defined as \"a place of refuge, asylum OR protection\" (my emphasis --American Heritage Dict.) It can occur naturally, serendipitously.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jean-Luc Dumont : could be - but that would imply a man-protected area. depends on context - I change to neutral for I think this is not a refuge but a natural nesting area or rather a group of nests in trees - whether on not this is part of a wildlife sanctuary

yes, context dictates, but it does say "for heron watching" implying the area has a specific function for humans.
agree writeaway : also possible, but having said that: the term heron sanctuary exists, so of course you'll find Google hits. the question is whether it is the right term here. citing the number of Google hits is pointless

maybe I am getting a bit zealous with the Google hits :)
